Up to one-third of critically ill patients have difficult intravenous access (DIVA). This occurs often in obese patients, those with generalized oedemas or in patients with previous venous cannulations1.

Setting up a peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) can be challenging for a variety of reasons, these include:

    • Small or fragile veins, such as infants or the elderly, as it can be tough to find a suitable vein.
    • Vein accessibility, as sometimes veins are not easily visible or palpable.
    • Patients who are restless or unable to stay still can make insertion difficult.
    • Previous scarring or trauma can make veins less accessible.

ITL BioMedical has a range of Difficult IV Access (DIVA) cannulation packs specifically tailored to support surgical ANTT and make for difficult ultrasound-guided cannula insertion easier.
